Anal Wart (Condyloma) Treatment

Anal warts (condylomas) are contagious lesions caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), forming around or inside the anus. They are transmitted through sexual contact and early treatment is important. If left untreated, they can spread rapidly to cover large areas.

Symptoms of Anal Warts

  • Appearance: Raised, skin-colored or pinkish, cauliflower-like structures.
  • Itching: Persistent itching in the anal area.
  • Bleeding: Minor bleeding due to irritation.
  • Discharge: Feeling of moisture or discharge.

Treatment Methods

  1. Cauterization / Laser: Destruction of warts using electrocautery or laser for small lesions. The most commonly preferred effective method.
  2. Cryotherapy: Freezing method; lesions are frozen and removed using liquid nitrogen.
  3. Surgical Excision: Surgical removal for extensive lesions.

Follow-up and HPV Management

  • Regular Follow-up: Since the HPV virus can remain in the body for some time, check-ups for 3–6 months after treatment are important.
  • HPV Vaccine: Consult your doctor about protective vaccination.
  • Partner Notification: Sexual partners should also be referred for evaluation.
